SAINT-GEORGES, le 18 juin 2023 - Le Canadien Luke Valenti de la formation Ecoflo Chronos est le nouveau champion du 35e Tour de Beauce.
L’Américain Tyler Stites de l’équipe Project Echelon a remporté la 5e et dernière étape du Tour de Beauce, qui avait lieu dimanche dans les rues du centre-ville de Saint-Georges. Stites avait également savouré la victoire samedi lors du critérium disputé à Québec.
Stites a arrêté le chrono à 3h 09m 02s, à près de 39 km/h de moyenne.
Le Québécois Laurent Gervais (Cannondale Echelon) a terminé au 2e rang de l’étape, suivi par le grand Matteo Dal-Cin (Toronto Hustle), qui montait en puissance de jour en jour.
Une stratégie payante
Au départ de cette ultime étape, personne ne pouvait prédire avec certitude qui serait couronné vainqueur.
L’exigeant circuit urbain de 12 tours et 122 kilomètres n’a pas fait mentir sa réputation avec un scénario enlevant et plusieurs difficiles ascensions de la 120e Rue.
Une échappée de six cyclistes a creusé l’écart jusqu’à environ deux minutes en tête de course. La stratégie de l’équipe Ecoflo Chrono a fonctionné parfaitement en plaçant Matisse Julien parmi l’échappée.
Avec 1min40s de retard au 6e rang du classement général, le Québécois pouvait même encore espérer gagner le Tour de Beauce. « Ça fait du bien de venir en Beauce et de prendre la course en main. La meilleure défense a été l’attaque », a expliqué Julien.
Au moment où l’avance des fuyards diminuait rapidement, le coéquipier de Julien, Luke Valenti, le porteur du maillot jaune, a réussi à fausser compagnie au peloton pour revenir sur la tête de course au terme d’un superbe effort. À la fin de l’étape, il ne lui restait plus qu’à éviter les erreurs pour mettre la main sur le titre. Valenti a finalement franchi la ligne d’arrivée en 5e place.
« On a dépassé nos objectifs. Peu importe, on voulait que l’équipe gagne. On n’aurait pas pu demander mieux », a conclu Julien, gagnant de la 1ere étape.
Sur le podium du classement général, le champion Valenti est accompagné sur la seconde marche par Tyler Stites et Carson Miles (Toronto Hustle), au 3e rang.
Un champion de 19 ans
Le nouveau champion, un Ontarien âgé de 19 ans seulement, termine évidemment en tête du classement du meilleur jeune de moins de 23 ans. Sur une épreuve de niveau UCI, il s’agit de la plus belle victoire de sa jeune carrière puisqu’il était d’âge junior en 2022.
Avec plusieurs places d’honneur depuis mercredi, l’Américain Stites met la main sur le maillot blanc du classement aux points.
Pour sa part, Eric Inkster (Cycling BC) conserve le maillot à pois de la montagne.
La formation Ecoflo Chronos termine quant à elle au premier rang du classement par équipe.
Au palmarès du Tour de Beauce, Luke Valenti succède à Brendan Rhim, vainqueur de la 34e présentation en 2019.
Luke Valenti is crowned champion
SAINT-GEORGES, June 18, 2023 - Canadian Luke Valenti of the Ecoflo Chronos team is the new champion of the 35th Tour de Beauce.
American Tyler Stites of the Project Echelon team won the 5th and final stage of the Tour de Beauce, which took place on Sunday in the streets of downtown Saint-Georges. Stites had also savored the victory on Saturday during the criterium disputed in Quebec.
Stites stopped the clock at 3h 09m 02s, at nearly 39 km/h on average.
Quebecer Laurent Gervais (Cannondale Echelon) finished 2nd in the stage, followed by the great Matteo Dal-Cin (Toronto Hustle), who was gaining momentum day by day.
A profitable strategy
At the start of this final stage, no one could predict with certainty who would be crowned the winner. The demanding street circuit of 12 laps and 122 kilometers lived up to its reputation with an exciting scenario and several difficult climbs of 120th Street.
A breakaway of six cyclists widened the gap to about two minutes at the head of the race. The strategy of the Ecoflo Chrono team worked perfectly by placing Matisse Julien among the breakaway.
With 1min40s behind in 6th place in the general classification, the Quebecer could even still hope to win the Tour de Beauce. “It feels good to come to Beauce and take charge of the race. The best defense was the attack,” explained Julien.
When the lead of the fugitives was rapidly diminishing, Julien's teammate, Luke Valenti, the wearer of the yellow jersey, managed to slip away from the peloton to return to the lead after a superb effort. At the end of the stage, all he had to do was avoid mistakes to get his hands on the title. Valenti finally crossed the finish line in 5th place.
“We exceeded our goals. Regardless, we wanted the team to win. We couldn't have asked for better”, concluded Julien, winner of the 1st stage. On the podium of the general classification, the champion Valenti is accompanied on the second step by Tyler Stites and Carson Miles (Toronto Hustle), in 3rd place.
A 19-year-old champion
The new champion, an Ontarian aged only 19, obviously finished first in the ranking of the best young person under 23 years old. On a UCI level event, this is the best victory of his young career since he was a junior in 2022.
With several places of honor since Wednesday, the American Stites gets his hands on the white jersey in the points classification. For his part, Eric Inkster (Cycling BC) keeps the mountain polka dot jersey. The Ecoflo Chronos team finished in first place in the team classification.
On the winners of the Tour de Beauce, Luke Valenti succeeds Brendan Rhim, winner of the 34th presentation in 2019.
