Le Colombien Wilmar Andres Paredes Zapata de la formation Medellin est le nouveau champion du 38e Tour de Beauce.

Vêtu du maillot jaune de meneur, le cycliste de 30 ans a même profité du travail exemplaire de ses équipiers pour arracher la victoire de cette 5e étape.

Le difficile circuit urbain de 13 tours et 132,6 kilomètres a été parcouru en 3 h 17 m 00 s, à une vitesse moyenne de 40,4 km/h.

Toujours bien positionné, Paredes Zapata a négocié parfaitement le dernier virage serré avec un peu plus de 300 mètres à faire pour filer vers la ligne sans trop craindre le retour de ses adversaires.

Gauthier deuxième

Tout juste derrière, le Québécois Jérôme Gauthier (Project Echelon) a bien tenté de combler l’écart au sprint, mais il n’était pas déçu de sa 2e place. Le Néerlandais Boris Van der Voort a terminé 3e de l’étape.

« Quand Paredes est parti à 300 mètres, j’ai vu que ça serait difficile mais j’ai tout donné en espérant qu’il ralentisse mais ce n’est pas arrivé ! Je suis quand même content de finir 2e », a expliqué Gauthier.

Selon lui, les Colombiens ont un peu menotté cette dernière journée. « C’était un peu plus contrôlé qu’à l’habitude, surtout la montée principale. Ils étaient plus forts que tout le monde. Personne ne pouvait les battre », a terminé le Québécois qui repart pour une deuxième année avec le maillot rouge de meilleur jeune de moins de 23 ans.

Avec la surveillance étroite de l’équipe Medellin, seule une échappée de quatre coureurs a pris le large avec une avance qui n’a jamais atteint les 90 secondes.

En début d’épreuve, les Québécois Bruno Langlois (Vélo Cartel) et Laurent Gervais (Project Echelon) ont tenté de fuir mais sans succès. Dans l’échappée du jour, le grand Robin Plamondon (Vélo Cartel) s’est illustré avant que les espoirs de leur petit groupe ne soient anéantis avec deux tours à faire.

L’hymne national de la Colombie a donc résonné une autre fois sur la 120e Rue, à Saint-Georges, avec la présence de plusieurs fans bruyants et festifs qui chantaient en agitant le drapeau du pays.

Le classement général est demeuré pratiquement inchangé au terme de cette dernière étape.

Le nouveau champion en titre du Tour de Beauce succède à Diego Camargo, qui termine 2e du classement général, alors que Tim McBirney (Project Echelon) a pris le 3e rang après un exploit en solitaire au mont Mégantic. Léo Roy (Entreposage Bluebird) est le meilleur Québécois avec une belle 5e place.

En plus du jaune, Paredes Zapata a aussi raflé le maillot blanc du classement aux points.

Enfin, le classement de la montagne a été remporté par le Québécois Samuel Couture, un autre talent local qui a connu une bonne semaine en Beauce.

Une partie de ce peloton 2026 reviendra à Saint-Georges dans moins de deux semaines pour le championnat canadien élite.

Another Colombian champion in the streets of Saint-Georges

Colombian Wilmar Andres Paredes Zapata of the Medellin team is the new champion of the 38th Tour de Beauce.

Wearing the yellow leader's jersey, the 30-year-old cyclist even took advantage of the exemplary work of his teammates to snatch victory in this 5th stage.

The challenging urban circuit of 13 laps and 132.6 kilometers was covered in 3 h 17 m 00 sec, at an average speed of 40.4 km/h.

Always well positioned, Paredes Zapata perfectly negotiated the last tight corner with more than 300 meters to go to head towards the line without too much fear of the return of his opponents.

Gauthier second

Right behind, Quebec's Jérôme Gauthier (Project Echelon ) tried to close the gap in the sprint, but he wasn't disappointed with his second place. Dutchman Boris Van der Voort finished third in the stage.

“When Paredes went 300 meters from the finish, I knew it would be difficult, but I gave it my all hoping he would slow down, but it didn’t happen! I’m still happy to finish 2nd,” explained Gauthier.

According to him, the Colombians really took control of the final day. "It was a bit more controlled than usual, especially the main climb. They were stronger than everyone else. Nobody could beat them," concluded the Quebecer, who leaves for a second year with the red jersey of best young rider under 23.

With the Medellin team closely watching, only a breakaway of four riders managed to get away with a lead that never reached 90 seconds.

At the start of the race, Quebecers Bruno Langlois (Vélo Cartel) and Laurent Gervais (Project Echelon ) attempted a breakaway but were unsuccessful. In the day's breakaway, the talented Robin Plamondon (Vélo Cartel) distinguished himself before the hopes of his small group were dashed with two laps to go.

In jubilation

The Colombian national anthem was once again played on 120th Street in Saint-Georges, with several noisy and festive fans present, singing and waving the country's flag.

The overall standings remained virtually unchanged at the end of this final stage.

The new Tour de Beauce champion succeeds Diego Camargo, who finished second overall, while Tim McBirney (Project Echelon ) took third place after a solo breakaway on Mont Mégantic. Léo Roy (Entreposage Bluebird ) was the top Quebecer with a strong fifth-place finish.

In addition to the yellow jersey, Paredes Zapata also snatched the white jersey for the points classification.

Finally, the mountain classification was won by Quebecer Samuel Couture, another local talent who had a good week in Beauce.

Part of this 2026 peloton will return to Saint-Georges in less than two weeks for the Canadian elite championship.
