QUÉBEC, le 17 juin 2023 - L’Américain Tyler Stites a remporté au sprint la 4e étape du Tour de Beauce qui avait lieu samedi dans les rues de Québec. Pour une quatrième journée consécutive, un nouveau meneur endosse le maillot jaune au terme de ce critérium de 35 tours et 70 kilomètres.
Luke Valenti, de la formation Ecoflo Chronos, prend les commandes de la course avec une seule journée à faire. Valenti avait auparavant terminé au 2e rang de la 1ere étape, mercredi. Sous une pluie constante, les cyclistes ont pris le départ en début d’après-midi sur Grande Allée, devant le Manège militaire.
Quatre fuyards ont réussi à fausser compagnie au peloton après quelques tours. William Hardin (Project Echelon), Jérôme Gauthier (Ecoflo Chronos), Alex Hoehn (Makadence Primeau Vélo) et Julien Gagné (Skyline-TSL) ont creusé l’écart à près d’une minute mais avec environ 12 tours à faire, le grand Matteo Dal-Cin (Toronto Hustle) a secoué le groupe à l’arrière avec une forte impulsion.
Quatre hommes sont alors parvenus à se détacher pour partir à la chasse du quatuor de tête. Tyler Stites était accompagné de Luke Valenti, Evan Russell (Cycling BC) et Carson Miles (Toronto Hustle), vainqueur la veille à Mégantic. Avec moins de trois tours à faire, ces derniers ont pu rejoindre le groupe à l’avant pour donner une fin de course excitante. Un groupe de huit coureurs s’est donc présenté dans le dernier droit, sur le difficile faux plat vers la ligne d’arrivée.
Stites a remporté l’étape, suivi par le Québécois Jérôme Gauthier et le Canadien Evan Russell. Camouflé dans le peloton à un plus d’une minute derrière, Félix Bouchard (Project Echelon) se fait arracher le maillot jaune par son dauphin au classement général. Bien campé au 2e rang du général, Luke Valenti accusait seulement 9 secondes de retard.
Toujours bien en vue, la formation Ecoflo Chronos récupère ainsi la précieuse tunique portée au début du Tour par Matisse Julien. Valenti détient aussi le maillot rouge de meilleur jeune de moins de 23 ans.
Dans les rues de Saint-Georges dimanche, Evan Russell portera le maillot blanc du classement aux points. Eric Inkster (Cycling BC) conserve le maillot à pois de la montagne.
À moins de 24 heures de couronner un nouveau champion, personne ne peut prédire qui remportera ce 35e Tour de Beauce. L’exigeant circuit urbain de 12 tours et 122 kilomètres fait toujours beaucoup de dégâts et plusieurs cyclistes peuvent encore espérer l’emporter. Le départ sera lancé à 11 h sur la 120e Rue, à Saint-Georges.
American Tyler Stites wins in the streets of Quebec
QUEBEC CITY, June 17, 2023 – The American rider Tyler Stites won the sprint of the 4th stage of the Tour de Beauce, which took place on Saturday in the streets of Quebec. For a fourth consecutive day, a new leader takes on the yellow jersey at the end of this criterium of 35 laps and 70 kilometers.
Luke Valenti, from the Ecoflo Chronos team, takes control of the race with only one day to go. Valenti had previously finished 2nd in the 1st stage on Wednesday. In constant rain, the cyclists set off in the early afternoon on Grande-Allée, in front of the Armory.
Four fugitives managed to slip away from the peloton after a few laps. William Hardin (Project Echelon), Jérôme Gauthier (Ecoflo Chronos), Alex Hoehn (Makadence Primeau Vélo) and Julien Gagné (Skyline-TSL) widened the gap to almost a minute but with around 12 laps to go, Matteo Dal-Cin (Toronto Hustle) rocked the group at the back with strong momentum.
Four men then managed to break away to go after the leading quartet. Tyler Stites was accompanied by Luke Valenti, Evan Russell (Cycling BC) and Carson Miles (Toronto Hustle), winner the day before at Mégantic. With less than three laps to go, the latter were able to join the group at the front to give an exciting end to the race. A group of eight riders therefore presented themselves on the home stretch, on the difficult false flat towards the finish line.
Stites won the stage, followed by Quebecer Jérôme Gauthier and Canadian Evan Russell. Camouflaged in the peloton more than a minute behind, Félix Bouchard (Project Echelon) had the yellow jersey snatched by his runner-up in the general classification. Well positioned in 2nd place overall, Luke Valenti was only 9 seconds behind.
Always in plain sight, the Ecoflo Chronos formation thus recovers the precious tunic worn at the start of the Tour by Matisse Julien. Valenti also holds the red jersey for the best young rider under 23.
In the streets of Saint-Georges on Sunday, Evan Russell will wear the white jersey for the points classification. Eric Inkster (Cycling BC) retains the mountain polka dot jersey.
With less than 24 hours to crown a new champion, no one can predict who will win this 35th Tour de Beauce. The demanding street circuit of 12 laps and 122 kilometers always does a lot of damage and several cyclists can still hope to win. The start will be launched at 11 a.m. on 120th Street, in Saint-Georges.
