JAMES PICCOLI SEUL AU SOMMET DANS LE BROUILLARD

(Parc National Mont-Mégantic, QC – Le 20 juin 2019) Le champion en titre du Tour de Beauce, James Piccoli (Canada), a remporté au sommet du mont Mégantic l'étape reine du 34e Tour de Beauce, devant Keegan Swirbul (Floyd’s Pro Cycling) et Kyle Murphy (Rally UHC Cycling).

Bien protégé par ses coéquipiers de l’équipe nationale canadienne, le Québécois Piccoli s’est détaché seul en tête dans l’ascension alors qu’il restait un peu plus de quatre kilomètres à gravir. Son avance s’est maintenue à une vingtaine de secondes pour fondre légèrement dans le dernier droit.

Cinq solides poursuivants étaient à ses trousses tout juste derrière, dont trois cyclistes de la formation Floyd’s, mais Piccoli n’a pas diminué la cadence en gérant son effort parfaitement. En solitaire, dans la pluie et le brouillard, Piccoli a levé les bras après 169 kilomètres et 4 h 15 m 00 s. Le second, Swirbul, a franchi la ligne avec 9 secondes de retard sur le gagnant, et Murphy, 23 secondes.

«La course était vraiment ouverte avec beaucoup de cassures. C’était le chaos mais j’avais tous mes coéquipiers pour m’aider. Ils ont fait ça à la perfection et je suis content d’avoir fini la job», a résumé Piccoli. L’an dernier, Piccoli avait amorcé une remontée au classement général en remportant le critérium de Québec, avant de mettre la main sur le titre le dernier jour dans les rues de Saint-Georges.

Le dangereux Serghei Tvetcov (Floyd’s Pro Cycling), 2e du Tour de Beauce 2018 a terminé au 4e rang de l’étape, tandis que le Québécois Adam Roberge, habituellement costaud au contre-la-montre, a pris le 5e rang.

Les Québécois sont à l’honneur en cette 2e étape puisque c’est Nicolas Zukowsky (Floyd’s Pro Cycling) qui endosse le maillot jaune de meneur après sa 6e position au sommet de la montagne, 50 secondes derrière le vainqueur Piccoli. En plus du jaune, il détient également le maillot rouge de meilleur jeune.

«On a essayé de le rejoindre mais il était vraiment très fort», a confié le nouveau maillot jaune, champion du Grand Prix de Saguenay dimanche dernier. Frigorifié, Zukowsky avait peine à sourire sur le podium balayé par le vent et la pluie.

Toute la journée, le peloton a affronté une météo difficile avec de fortes averses et une température maximale de 15 °C. Plusieurs cyclistes ont souffert du temps humide, mais aussi de la vitesse très élevée toute la journée. Aucune échappée n’a réussi à prendre le large et l’élimination s’est faite par l’arrière.

Le maillot blanc du classement par points appartient au Mexicain Ignacio Prado Juarez (Canel’s-Specialized), tandis que le Colombien Oscar Eduardo Sanchez Guarin (Canel’s-Specialized) portera le maillot à pois de meilleur grimpeur.

Le maillot jaune pourrait à nouveau changer d'épaules après l'épreuve individuelle de 19,4 kilomètres vendredi matin à Saint-Prosper.

Roberge, Piccoli et Tvetcov devraient notamment offrir une bonne performance mais Zukowsky, talentueux lui aussi, pourrait surprendre.

En soirée, une courte étape de 77 kilomètres se terminera au sommet du mur de la 20e Rue, à Notre-Dame-des-Pins.

JAMES PICCOLI ALONE AT THE SUMMIT OF MONT-MÉGANTIC

(Parc National Mont-Mégantic, QC – June 20, 2019) Defending Tour de Beauce champion James Piccoli (Canada) won the summit stage of Mont-Mégantic at the 34th Tour de Beauce, ahead of Keegan Swirbul (Floyd's Pro Cycling) and Kyle Murphy (Rally UHC Cycling).

Well-protected by his teammates on the Canadian National Team, Quebec cyclist James Piccoli broke away alone in the lead while climbing a little more than four kilometers to climb. His lead was maintained at about twenty seconds to melt slightly in the last stretch.

Five strong pursuers were just behind him, including three from Floyd's Pro Cycling, but Piccoli kept up the pace by managing his effort perfectly. Solitary, in rain and fog, Piccoli raised his arms after 169 kilometers and 4 h 15 m 00 s. The second, Swirbul, crossed the line 9 seconds behind the winner, and Murphy, 23 seconds.

“The race was really open with a lot of breaks. It was chaos but I had all my teammates to help me. They did it perfectly and I'm happy to have finished the job,” said Piccoli. Last year, Piccoli began a comeback in the overall standings when he won the Quebec City Criterium before getting his hands on the title on the last day in the streets of Saint-Georges.

The dangerous Serghei Tvetcov (Floyd's Pro Cycling), 2nd in the Tour de Beauce last year, finished 4th in the stage, while Quebecer Adam Roberge, who is usually strong in the time-trial, was 5th.

Quebecers are in the spotlight of this second stage since it is Nicolas Zukowsky (Floyd's Pro Cycling) who took the Yellow Jersey as race leader after his 6th position at the top of the mountain, 50 seconds behind the winner Piccoli. In addition to the yellow, he also holds the red jersey of best young rider.

“We tried to join him but he was really strong,” said the new yellow jersey wearer and champion of the Grand Prix Saguenay last Sunday. Frozen, Zukowsky could hardly smile on the podium swept by the wind and the rain.

In the evening, a short 77-kilometer stage will end at the top of the wall on 20th Street in Notre-Dame-des-Pins.
