MONT-MÉGANTIC – Le Canadien Carson Miles de l’équipe Toronto Hustle a remporté au sommet du mont Mégantic l’étape reine du 35e Tour de Beauce, tout juste devant le Québécois Félix Bouchard, qui endosse le maillot jaune.
Carson Miles, 22 ans, met ainsi la main sur la plus belle victoire de sa jeune carrière. L’ancien porte-couleur de l’équipe de développement Israel-Premier Tech U23 avait terminé 4e du championnat canadien sur route en 2022.
Pour sa part, Bouchard (Cannondale Echelon p/b 4iiii), âgé de 20 ans seulement, est le nouveau meneur au classement général. Le jeune cycliste, transfuge du vélo de montagne, a réalisé une superbe ascension pour prendre les commandes de la course. Bouchard avait terminé au 5e rang lors des deux premières étapes.
Une première
À sa première participation au Tour de Beauce, la recrue figure aussi en tête du classement du meilleur jeune de moins de 23 ans. Souriant, le Québécois semblait un peu surpris sur le podium.
Luke Valenti, de la formation Ecoflo Chronos, a pris le 3e rang de cette 3e étape.
Toujours bien positionné, Matisse Julien conserve le maillot blanc du classement aux points après une bonne performance dans la montagne.
Eric Inkster (Cycling BC) est le nouveau porteur du maillot à pois du classement de la montagne.
Le vétéran Matteo Dal-Cin, 32 ans, excellent grimpeur de l’équipe Toronto Hustle et vainqueur au mont Mégantic en 2017, a également terminé dans le top 10 de l’étape.
Après une première heure de course encore disputée à très vive allure, une échappée de cinq coureurs a animé l’épreuve du jour. Les fuyards ont longtemps maintenu un écart entre deux et trois minutes. Avec le retour du peloton, deux rescapés ont tenté sans succès de poursuivre l’aventure jusqu’au pied de la montagne. Plusieurs dizaines de cyclistes se sont donc présentés à l’entrée du parc national pour entamer la montée.
Plusieurs batailles
Pour une troisième journée consécutive, le peloton n’a pas souffert de la chaleur avec une météo capricieuse. Le ciel ne semble pas vouloir collaborer non plus pour le critérium dans les rues de Québec samedi.
Le maillot jaune pourrait encore une fois changer d'épaules après une bataille de 35 tours sur la Grande Allée près de la fontaine de Tourny. Rien n’est joué et plusieurs aspirants peuvent encore gagner.
En 2018, James Piccoli avait amorcé une remontée au classement général lors en remportant le critérium de Québec, avant de mettre la main sur le titre le dernier jour dans les rues de Saint-Georges.
Lors des dernières présentations du Tour de Beauce, la dernière étape en circuit urbain s’est terminée par un scénario incroyable. En 2017 et 2018, les deux champions du Tour de Beauce se trouvaient chaque fois au 8e rang du classement général. En 2019, Brendan Rhim se trouvait aussi au 4e rang avant de se sauver avec le titre.
Carson Miles winner at the top of Megantic
MONT-MÉGANTIC – Canadian Carson Miles of the Toronto Hustle team won the queen stage of the 35th Tour de Beauce at the top of Mont Mégantic, just ahead of Quebecer Félix Bouchard, who is now wearing the yellow jersey.
Carson Miles, 22, thus gets his hands on the greatest victory of his young career. The former rider of the Israel-Premier Tech U23 development team finished 4th in the Canadian road championship in 2022.
For his part, Bouchard (Cannondale Echelon p/b 4iiii), only 20 years old, is the new leader in the general classification. The young cyclist, a defector from mountain biking, achieved a superb ascent to take control of the race. Bouchard had finished 5th in the first two stages.
A first
In his first participation in the Tour de Beauce, the rookie is also at the top of the classification of the best young rider under 23 years old. Smiling, the Quebecer seemed a little surprised on the podium. Luke Valenti, from the Ecoflo Chronos team, took 3rd place in this 3rd stage.
Still well positioned, Matisse Julien retains the white jersey in the points classification after a good performance in the mountains. Eric Inkster (Cycling BC) is the new polka dot jersey wearer in the mountain classification.
Veteran Matteo Dal-Cin, 32, an excellent climber for the Toronto Hustle team and winner at Mont Mégantic in 2017, also finished in the top 10 of the stage.
After a first hour of racing still contested at very high speed, a breakaway of five riders animated the day's race. The fugitives have long maintained a gap between two and three minutes. With the return of the peloton, two survivors tried unsuccessfully to continue the adventure to the foot of the mountain. Several dozen cyclists therefore presented themselves at the entrance to the national park to begin the climb.
Several battles
For a third consecutive day, the peloton did not suffer from the heat with capricious weather. The sky does not seem to want to collaborate either for the criterium in the streets of Quebec on Saturday.
The yellow jersey could once again change hands after a 35-lap battle on the Grande-Allée near the Tourny fountain. Nothing is played and several aspirants can still win.
In 2018, James Piccoli had started a rise in the general classification by winning the Criterium in Québec, before getting his hands on the title on the last day in the streets of Saint-Georges.
During the last presentations of the Tour de Beauce, the last stage on the urban circuit ended with an incredible scenario. In 2017 and 2018, the two Tour de Beauce champions were each time in 8th place in the general classification. In 2019, Brendan Rhim was also in 4th place before escaping with the title.
