Une victoire d’étape pour Diego Milan-Jimenez
(Saint-Georges, QC – Le 23 juin 2019) L’Américain Brendan Rhim de la formation Arapahoe|Hincapie p/b BMC a remporté le 34e Tour de Beauce, dimanche, dans les rues de Saint-Georges.
Après avoir vraiment tout tenté, le Québécois James Piccoli, vainqueur en 2018, termine au 2e rang du classement général à 14 secondes du nouveau champion. Un autre Québécois, Nickolas Zukowsky (Floyd’s Pro Cycling) grimpe sur la 3e marche du podium final.
« Je ne peux pas être déçu. Nous avons vraiment tout essayé. On est content du résultat», a confié Piccoli.
Le Dominicain Diego Milan Jiminez, de l’équipe Inteja IMCA-Ridea, a gagné cette dernière étape complètement folle sur le difficile circuit urbain qui fait des dégâts chaque année. La course de 122,4 km s’est terminée en 3 h 07 m 57 s.
Jiminez a devancé au sprint Brendan Rhim et Keegan Swirbul (Floyd’s Pro Cycling).
Le titre de ce Tour de Beauce s’est joué au sprint final dans les 200 derniers mètres alors que James Piccoli a terminé 4e de l’étape, à seulement trois secondes de Brendan Rhim. Malgré le soleil, de très forts vents ont balayé le circuit toute la journée.
« C’était très serré. On ne sait jamais. Je pense que Piccoli était plus fort dans la montée mais je pense que mon sprint était mieux », a résumé Rhim, très heureux de sa victoire.
C’est donc par quelques secondes à peine que cette épreuve UCI se termine. Quatrième du classement général au départ, Rhim devançait déjà Piccoli par 4 secondes avant la bataille finale. Sa 2e place lui permet également d’empocher quelques secondes de plus en bonification.
Avec moins de trois tours à faire, six cyclistes ont réussi à prendre une trentaine de secondes d’avance. Dans ce petit groupe, Piccoli et Rhim se sont livrés une guerre incroyable.
Dans la dernière longue ascension, avec quatre kilomètres à faire, Piccoli semblait plus fort que son adversaire, mais Rhim a eu le meilleur au sprint pour endosser le maillot jaune qu’il n’avait jamais porté encore depuis le début de la semaine.
Le meneur au départ, Nickolas Zukowsky (Floyd’s Pro Cycling), a terminé au 7e rang de cette étape, avec seulement 37 secondes de retard sur le gagnant. Zukowsky a vraiment résisté jusqu’au dernier moment mais il termine au 3e rang du Tour de Beauce, à 36 secondes de Rhim au classement général. Il enfile également le maillot rouge de meilleur jeune.
Dans cet ultime affrontement, l’autre meneur, l’Américain Tyler Magner (Rally UHC Pro Cycling) a craqué le premier, suivi par le grand Adam Roberge, qui dégringole du 5e au 13e rang.
« Je ne peux pas être déçu. Je me sentais bien. J’étais confiant et l’équipe a bien roulé. Troisième au Tour de Beauce et meilleur jeune, je suis quand même content ! Ça fait deux grosses courses avec Saguenay et c’est bon en vue des championnats canadiens la semaine prochaine », a expliqué Zukowsky.
Depuis trois ans, la dernière étape se termine par un scénario incroyable. En 2017 et 2018, les deux champions du Tour de Beauce se trouvaient chaque fois au 8e rang du classement général. Cette fois-ci, Brendan Rhim se trouvait au 4e rang avant de se sauver avec le titre de ce 34e Tour de Beauce.

BRENDAN RHIM SACRED 2019 TOUR DE BEAUCE CHAMPION Diego Milan-Jimenez takes the stage win
(Saint-Georges, QC – June 23, 2019) American cyclist Brendan Rhim of Arapahoe | Hincapie p/b BMC won the 34th Tour de Beauce, Sunday, in the streets of Saint-Georges.
After deploying strong performance to defend his title, James Piccoli of Montreal finished second overall, 14 seconds behind the new champion. Another Quebecer, Nickolas Zukowsky (Floyd's Pro Cycling) climbs on the third step of the final podium.
“I can not be disappointed. We really tried everything. We are happy with the result,” commented Piccoli.
The Dominican Diego Miguel Jiminez, from the Inteja IMCA-Ridea team, won this completely crazy last stage on the difficult urban circuit that is renowned for doing damage every year. The 122.4-km course ended in 3:07:57.
On the final sprint, Jiminez beat Brendan Rhim and Floyd's Pro Cycling rider Keegan Swirbul.
The title of this Tour de Beauce was played in the final sprint in the last 200 meters while James Piccoli finished fourth of the stage, just three seconds by Brendan Rhim. Despite the sunny skies, very strong winds swept the circuit all day.
“It was very tight. We never know. Piccoli was stronger on the climb, but I think my sprint was better,” Rhim summarized, very pleased with his win.
It is by a mere few seconds that this important UCI race is finished. Fourth overall at the start, Rhim was already ahead of Piccoli by four seconds before the final battle. His second place also allowed him to add a few more seconds in bonuses.
With less than three laps to go, six cyclists managed to take about 30 seconds on the main group. In this small breakaway group, Piccoli and Rhim both delivered an incredible war.
In the last long climb, with four kilometers to go, Piccoli seemed stronger than his opponent, but Rhim had tougher sprinting abilities to take on the yellow jersey he had never worn since the start of the week.
The leader at the start, Nickolas Zukowsky (Floyd's Pro Cycling) finished seventh in this stage, only 37 seconds behind the winner. Zukowsky really resisted until the last moment, but he finished third in the Tour de Beauce, 36 seconds behind Rhim in the General Classification. He also earned the red jersey as the best young rider.
In this final stage, the other leader in the General Classification, the American Tyler Magner (Rally UHC Pro Cycling) cracked first, followed by Adam Roberge, who tumbled from fifth to 13th.
“I can not be disappointed. I felt really good. I was confident, and the team rode well. Third position in the Tour de Beauce and best young rider, I'm still very happy! It was two consecutive big races after Saguenay last week, and it's good for the Canadian Championships next week,” explained Zukowsky.
For three years, the spectacular stage finished in an amazing scenario. In 2017 and 2018, the two champions of the Tour de Beauce were each ranked eighth overall before the stage. This time, Brendan Rhim was in fourth place before fleeing with the title of this 34th edition.
