Teams roll in St-Georges for start of Tour de Beauce


20 teams coming to race 29th edition of Tour du Beauce

(Saint-Georges, QC – June 10 2014) The 20 teams present at the 2014Tour de Beauce, which is celebrating its 29th edition, arrived on Tuesday in St-Georges de Beauce to compete for the ultimate honors of this classic race on the International Cycling Union (UCI) calendar, the oldest stage race in North America presented without interruption.

Several teams arrived from the Saguenay as they just completed the first Grand Prix cycliste de Saguenay, while others arrived from their respective countries and regions.

The American Team SmartStop with the presence of the sprinter Jure Kocjan, winner of the inaugural Grand Prix cycliste de Saguenay, will be among the group in contention for the GC. The SmartStop team surprised the cycling world with its victory at the U.S. Championships a few weeks ago.

Danish team Christina Watches-Kuma are also armed with power, with Giro d'Italia stage winner Stefan Schumacher among its rank, and the best young rider in Saguenay Asbjorn Kragh Andersen.

Italian team Amore & Vita-Selle SMD have climber Luca Benedetti who won the polka dot jersey last week, as well as Canadians Michael Woods, ninth last season in Beauce, and Quebec cyclist James Piccoli.

We must not overlook the presence of Colombian team 4-72 Columbia, which has within its alignment powerful climbers who could certainly win the famed stage of Mont-Mégantic National Park.

The Optum-Kelly Benefits team is led by Director Sportif Eric Wohlberg, himself a winner of the Tour de Beauce in 1995. Sprinter Eric Young won two stages in Saguenay last week, and earned the yellow jersey for three of the four stages.

The U.S. team 5hr Energy p / b Kenda will also race with the Quebec cyclist Bruno Langlois among its roster. Langlois won the KOM at the GP cycliste de Quebec of the World Tour. Also of note is the presence of Chad Beyer, who completed the Giro d'Italia in 2011 with the BMC Racing team, and winner of the KOM at the 2012 Tour of the Gila.

Jelly Belly p / b Maxxis brings to Beauce winner of the Giro d'Italia KOM jersey in Matthew Lloyd, sprinter Serghei Tvetcov and the Canadian Nic Hamilton, who is coming back from an excellent European block with a third place at the An Post Ras in Ireland.

The professional continental team Novo Nordisk is entirely composed of cyclist with diabetes, and they will be present for another year at the Tour de Beauce. The team collected some podiums this year and is still looking for its first UCI win, coming very close last week in Saguenay with a second position.

The Budget Forklifts team are ending in Beauce its first ever block of races in North American soil, after participating in Philly Parx Casino Classic and Grand Prix de Saguenay. The Australian team will bring to the start line some contenders for the general classification in Tim Roe and Michael Vink.

Canadian continental teams with Silber Pro Cycling in alignment former Canadian Champion and winner of the Tro Bro Leon Ryan Roth and athletic director Gord Fraser and Garneau-Quebecor Pierrick Naud with sprinter and powerful Remi Pelletier-Roy will also be the start of the Tour de Beauce.

This year's Tour de Beauce will crown a new champion, as 2013 Champion Nathan Brown will not be present to defend his title.

The Tour de Beauce is contested on five stages, from Wednesday June 11 to Sunday, June 15. Cyclists will travel the roads of the region with the goal of winning the overall title and the five jerseys.
