SEPP KUSS CONQUERS THE MOUNTAIN ON SECOND STAGE OF TOUR DE BEAUCE

(Saint-Georges, QC) American Sepp Kuss of Rally Cycling won the summit finish race of Mont Mégantic, dubbed as the Queen Stage of the 31st Tour de Beauce. Supp crossed the line eight seconds ahead of Mexican Luis Lemus (Cycling Academy) and Canadian Hugo Houle inched his way closer to the coveted yellow jersey, on the eve the time trial race.

Lemus attacked from the base of the gruelling climb five kilometers to end the race, but had to admit defeat as Kuss overtook him in the final meters of the race. After 170 kilometers or racing, the winner crossed the line after 4 h 15 min 32s.

Tagged as a rider to beat in this race, Hugo Houle (Team Canada) showed his ambitions for the general classification on this second stage.

Cycling Academy Team, winner of the first stage, tried to develop and implement a strategy to keep Mihkel Raim’s Yellow Jersey within their Israeli squad, but the American Champion Gregory Daniel (Axeon Hagens Berman) which finished about a minute behind Lemus atop Mégantic, managed to capture the leader’s jersey by just a few seconds.

Daniel also earned the Red Jersey of Best Young Rider, as well as the White Jersey for leading the points classification.

Robert Squire (Holowesko) captured the King of the Mountains Polka Dot Jersey after an amazing performance climbing up in the day's breakaway. The American won the maximum number of points – 40pts -  in the first four opening KOM sprints, up the Mout Morne and the Marston climb.

The story of the day arose very quickly. The very nervous peloton covered 44 kilometers in the first hour of the lively race. A group of 24 riders broke away, but the break has quietly been reduced to 12 riders. Their lead never exceeded two minutes.

Raim, wearing the Yellow Jersey, won the first intermediate sprint in the breakaway of the day, a sign that the mountain stage are less suitable to his abilities on the saddle. The latter even launched two attacks in the final straight to the Mont Mégantic climb, before surrendering.

Youngster David Drouin, originally from the Beauce, made a fine performance by taking an impressive 13th place, finishing the stage just 1m57s behind the stage winner Kuss.

A few hours away from his favorite stage, Hugo Houle finds firm footing in the 3rd place of the General Classifcation, at 19 seconds behind the prize possession. His experience at the Giro d’Italia is not to be overlooked in tomorrow’s time trial.

“It's hard to do better. I ran out of legs a little and I was on the verge of cramping but it quietly back,” said the professional cyclist of 25 years of age, under contract with AG2R-La Mondiale of the WorldTour.

Canadian champion in the time trial, and aspiring to a spot on the Olympics squad, Houle took 36 seconds to Ryan Roth (Silber) and a minute Rob Britton (Rally), two Canadian opponents who can do well in the time trial race. Britton was second of the general classification at 2014 Tour de Beauce while Roth stepped on the podium in the TT stage last year.

“I did my job. I'm happy,” said Houle. Many observers also see him wearing yellow after the 19-km time trial competition taking place Friday morning in Saint-Prosper.

The last Canadian to win the Tour de Beauce is Svein Tuft in 2008. Jacques Landry is the last champion hailing from Quebec in 1994.
